Google makes it easier to search for programming languages answers

Google can now handle queries containing sequences of 2–3 special characters.

Google announced they now let you search using sequences of two or three special characters, something many coders do when looking for programming help in search. So now you can go to Google and search for technical queries such as [== vs ===] and [+=].
Google gave the example, if you’re searching for the meaning of [c++17], you will get results for the well-known programming language instead of c17, which brings up a Boeing airplane.
Here is an example of a search result page for such technical queries:
Google also made it better for organization and product names that include punctuation. So for companies name She++ and Notepad++, Google will now return more accurate results.

Bing UK now displaying National Health Service data for GP & hospital search queries

Searching for nearby GPs and hospitals on Bing UK will surface information pulled from the country's publicly-funded national healthcare system.

According to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), the publicly funded national healthcare system has been working with Bing UK during the last year to improve search results for general practitioner and hospital queries.
“Over the last year, we have collaborated with our friends at Bing to provide users with a comprehensive GP and hospital search experience,” reports a recent post on the NHS Choices blog.
The NHS says that queries for “GP in [location]” on Bing UK will now surface a list of local options with information on specific locations, open times and user reviews — all data that has been pulled from the NHS

Clicking on a result will display more information for the GP’s office.

Ida Lewis Google Doodle marks 175th birthday of ‘America’s Bravest Woman’

As Rhode Island's most famous lighthouse keeper, Lewis saved a number of lives from drowning, including the two soldiers that inspired the doodle.

Today’s Google doodle marks the 175th birthday of Ida Lewis, a lighthouse keeper once hailed as “America’s Bravest Woman” for the numerous lives she saved from drowning.
As the owner of the Lime Rock Lighthouse in Rhode Island, Google says Idawalley Zorada Lewis made her first save at the age of 12 and continued braving into the Newport harbor’s dangerous, cold waters to save drowning men and women all the way into her sixties.
From the Google Doodle Blog:
A lighthouse keeper required unwavering courage, sheer physical strength, constant diligence, and a willingness to put one’s own life on the line. Ida was so dedicated that supposedly she would rush into inclement weather without shoes or coat so as not a waste a single second. Her life and legacy were not only an honor to research and illustrate, but truly a source of inspiration.
Today’s doodle was inspired by an event that resulted in Lewis being awarded a Gold Lifesaving Medal from President Grant when she saved two soldiers who had fallen through ice in February of 1881. While many of the lives Lewis saved went unrecorded, Google says that day’s events were covered in local newspapers and, at least, one national publication.
Designed by doodler Lydia Nichols, the doodle is a slide show made up of the following ten images highlighting Lewis’ actions and the accolades she received:
The doodle leads to a search for “Ida Lewis” and is being displayed on Google’s U.S. homepage and on a handful of other International homepages.

Google to sunset Google Site Search by end of 2017

Google is telling their Site Search customers they have to find a new internal search engine service.

Google has confirmed with Search Engine Land that they are discontinuing support for Google Site Search product. Google Site Search is a paid product that lets you power your internal web site’s search engine based on the Google search technology. Google charges based on monthly query volume for the product.
Google said they are directing those consumers to either the ad-powered product named free custom search engine or the new cloud search product.
Google will stop fully supporting the Google Site Search product by the fourth-quarter of 2017.
A Google spokesperson sent us the following statement:
We are winding down the Google Site Search product over the next year, but will provide customer and technical support through the duration of license agreements. For GSS users whose contract expires between April 1st and June 30th, 2017, we are providing a free 3-month extension with additional query volume to allow more time for them to implement the necessary changes to their site. GSS customers may also take advantage of our Custom Search Engine solution, an ads-supported model that offers similar functionality. We continue to build out new functionality and invest in new technology that make enterprise search a great experience for our customers. Just recently, we introduced the general availability of Google Cloud Search for G Suite customers.

Google Maps new feature lets users create lists of saved places that can be shared & accessed offline

Users can keep track of saved places and share lists with others via text, email and popular messaging apps.

Google Maps has added a new list-making feature that lets users save locations to a specified list so that it can be accessed later — even offline — and shared with other users.
To save a location in Google Maps, tap on its name and then the “Save” icon to add it to a list. Lists of saved places can be organized under preset lists Google has already named, like “Want to go” or “Favorites,” or users can create a new list.
Google says lists can be shared by text and email, on social networks and via popular messaging apps.
From the Google Maps Blog:
Whenever friends and family come to town, tap the share button to get a link and start flexing your local knowledge muscles. Once you send a link to your out-of-towners, they can tap “Follow” to pull up the list from Your Places whenever they need it.
Google posted the following video to show how the new feature works:
Google says the new list-making feature in Google Maps works on both desktop and Android and iOS mobile devices.

AdWords Converted Clicks sunsets for good in March

The old metric will vanish completely as "conversions" measurement fully takes over.

It’s been months since Google first announced it would be deprecating “converted clicks” for “conversions” in AdWords. The metric is going away for good in March.
As of September 2016, advertisers could no longer use “converted clicks” in bidding strategies. When March comes, any “converted clicks” columns will no longer show in AdWords reporting. Any automated rules using “converted clicks” will need to use “conversions.” Now is  a good time to do a final housekeeping check just in case there might be any lingering uses in your rules.
Google made the move to “conversions” to be able to measure and report on different conversion actions and when multiple conversion actions occur after an ad click. “Conversions” also supports store visits and cross-device conversions.

Report: Releasing Super Bowl ads early jump-starts lifts in brand search

Quantcast data shows impact of releasing ads and teasers online ahead of the big game.

It’s no secret that most Super Bowl advertisers see a surge in search volume on and immediately following game day. What is not so well known is how much of a bump advertisers can gain by releasing their ads, or ad teasers, as is increasingly common this year, ahead of Super Bowl Sunday.
Technology company Quancast pulled some data for Search Engine Land to help answer that question. A look at five brands that have released their ads online ahead of Super Bowl LI shows the impact can vary widely, but all five saw a lift in brand searches in the days after release.
CPG brands Snickers and Budweiser saw by far the biggest jumps in brand search volume. Snickers has garnered attention for its four teaser ads in which the brand touts it will film the first live commercial, starring Adam Driver, during the game. Buzz around those teasers drove brand searches up 2,669 percent. Budweiser’s ad telling the story of its immigrant roots led to a brand search volume lift of 650 percent in the days after releasing the ad online.
The Quantcast data may also indicate that these bigger consumer brands are likely to see the largest surges in brand search volume when releasing ad content before the game. Super Bowl newcomer Mr. Clean saw the smallest bump among the CPG brands with the release of its teaser ads, though it still garnered a significant lift of 313 percent.
The two B2B brands Quantcast looked at saw less of an impact. Intel’s online release of its first Super Bowl ad, featuring Tom Brady doing everyday things, led to a relatively small bump of 136 percent in brand search. This spot will likely garner much more attention during the game, in which Tom Brady aims to win his fifth Super Bowl title. It will be interesting to see how much that translates to a brand search for Intel. Web development company Wix.com’s early release of its ad drove just a slight lift of 24 percent.
If you’re wondering how much of a relative bump in brand search Snickers and Budweiser have seen from past Super Bowl efforts, Google Trends data helps illustrate it.

‘Budweiser’ Google Trends data

Nothing else has driven brand search for Budweiser like the Super Bowl.

‘Snickers’ Google Trends data

Halloween gives the big game a run for its money for the candy brand. If Quantcast’s early data is any indication, however, Snickers could see its Super Bowl efforts rival those of 2015.

With Super Bowl ads costing $5 million for a 30-second spot this year, Quantcast’s data would seem to underscore the benefits of an early online strategy for Super Bowl advertisers to drive brand awareness.

Former Google search chief Amit Singhal joins Uber

Singhal will become a senior vice president of engineering, overseeing Uber's Maps & Marketplace departments.

What do you do after running Google search for 15 years? For Amit Singhal, it was going to be time off and a focus on his foundation. But now, Google’s former search chief is joining Uber as a senior vice president of engineering overseeing the Map and Marketplace departments.
TechCrunch has a long interview with Singhal and the news. He left Google about a year ago and has been spending time on his foundation to help get promising kids to top schools in India. But with that apparently humming along, it sounds as if Singhal was ready for a new challenge — one that came up after meeting Uber CEO Travis Kalanick.
Singhal said he found the computer science challenge of Uber too interesting to pass up. From what he told TechCrunch:
“This company is not only doing things that are amazing, this company also has some of the toughest computer science challenges that I have seen in my career of 25 years,” Singhal told me. “Those computer science challenges for a computer science geek are just intriguing — you give a geek a puzzle, they can’t drop it; they need to solve the puzzle. That’s how it felt to me.”
Amazingly, he puts the challenge at Uber on par with the challenge of creating a search engine:
“At Uber, this team is actually hiding so much deep science behind a very simple interface of pushing a button and having a car show up,” Singhal explained. “The science that goes on behind that is equally as complex as what we had to do at Google.”
Perhaps the science is deep, and no doubt there are challenges with it, but as complicated as coming up with the right answers to billions of different questions asked and answered each day by Google?
TechCrunch also separately reports that Uber has picked up another former Googler, Kevin Thompson, who was VP of engineering on ads for YouTube. He’ll be the vice president, marketplace engineering, for Uber.
