Ida Lewis Google Doodle marks 175th birthday of ‘America’s Bravest Woman’

As Rhode Island's most famous lighthouse keeper, Lewis saved a number of lives from drowning, including the two soldiers that inspired the doodle.

Today’s Google doodle marks the 175th birthday of Ida Lewis, a lighthouse keeper once hailed as “America’s Bravest Woman” for the numerous lives she saved from drowning.
As the owner of the Lime Rock Lighthouse in Rhode Island, Google says Idawalley Zorada Lewis made her first save at the age of 12 and continued braving into the Newport harbor’s dangerous, cold waters to save drowning men and women all the way into her sixties.
From the Google Doodle Blog:
A lighthouse keeper required unwavering courage, sheer physical strength, constant diligence, and a willingness to put one’s own life on the line. Ida was so dedicated that supposedly she would rush into inclement weather without shoes or coat so as not a waste a single second. Her life and legacy were not only an honor to research and illustrate, but truly a source of inspiration.
Today’s doodle was inspired by an event that resulted in Lewis being awarded a Gold Lifesaving Medal from President Grant when she saved two soldiers who had fallen through ice in February of 1881. While many of the lives Lewis saved went unrecorded, Google says that day’s events were covered in local newspapers and, at least, one national publication.
Designed by doodler Lydia Nichols, the doodle is a slide show made up of the following ten images highlighting Lewis’ actions and the accolades she received:
The doodle leads to a search for “Ida Lewis” and is being displayed on Google’s U.S. homepage and on a handful of other International homepages.

‘Tis the season! Google spreads more cheer on Day 2 of its Holiday 2016 doodle series

For Christmas Eve, Google's Day 2 Holiday Doodle has the Google letters making hearts and smiley faces on fogged up windows.

Today’s Google Doodle is the second in its series of Holiday 2016 series. For Christmas Eve, the Google letters are making hearts, stars, smiling faces and hand-prints behind fogged up windows.
From the Google Doodle Blog:
Happy holidays! This is the perfect time of year to cozy up to the window with your favorite blanket or mug, and watch the snow fall. While you’re there, sketch a foggy doodle or two (or five) of your own.
Like yesterday’s doodle, the animated image was designed by Gerben Steenks and leads to a search for “‘Tis the season!”

Google also put together a Day 2 holiday doodle for the “warmer climates” that is appearing on its home pages in a handful of South American countries, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and the Philippines.

First day of winter Google doodle marks Northern Hemisphere’s Winter Solstice 2016

Google's Southern Hemisphere home pages have a similar doodle to mark the first day of summer for the other half of the world.

As usual, Google is marking the first day of the Winter and Summer Solstice — depending on which half of the globe you live — with a doodle.
Both doodles were designed by doodler Nate Swinehart and include animated images of a rock family.
For the winter doodle, the rocks are covered with snow around a tree that has lost its leaves for the season. The Winter Solstice doodle on the US home page leads to a search for “first day of winter” and has the usual sharing icon to post the image on social feeds or send via email.

Winter Solstice 2016 Doodle

The Summer Solstice doodle includes the same rock family, but in a much warmer setting. The doodle on Google’s home page in Brazil leads to a search for “Solstício de Verão” — which translates to Summer Solstice.

Summer Solstice 2016 Doodle

From the Google Doodle Blog for the Winter Solstice doodle:
The solstice is named for the brief time when the sun appears to pause its movement across the sky. At that moment, the tilt and rotation of the earth shifts our view of the sun’s direction from southward to northward, causing it to hang momentarily suspended.
It may be officially winter here, but at least the days will start getting longer again.

Steve Biko Google doodle honors anti-apartheid activist & founder of the Black Consciousness Movement

Biko spent his life fighting South Africa's apartheid policies and racial injustice.

Today’s Google doodle commemorates the legacy of South Africa’s Steve Biko, the anti-apartheid activist who founded the Black Consciousness Movement.
Born in on this date in 1946 in Ginsberg, South Africa, Biko would have turned 70 today. It was during his time as a medical school student that Biko founded the Black Consciousness Movement to fight apartheid policies, and empower black South Africans to take pride in their racial identities and cultural heritage.
In February of 1973, the pro-apartheid government banned Biko for anti-apartheid activism. Under this ban, Biko wasn’t allowed to speak to more than one person at a time, was forbidden to speak in public and to the media, and was forced to stay in a single district. In spite of this, Biko continued to form grassroots organizations and organize protests, including the Soweto Uprising in June of 1976.

Leading to search results for “Steve Biko,” the doodle features the young Biko among his many supporters.

Biko’s life was cut short when he was brutally beaten to death by South African police officers after being arrested at a police roadblock in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Biko died in September of 1977, three months before his 31st birthday.
“On the 70th anniversary of Biko’s birth, we remember his courage and the important legacy he left behind,” writes Google, “Thank you, Steve Biko, for dedicating your life to the pursuit of equality for all.”
